Proposition 65 enables Californians to make informed decisions about protecting themselves from exposure to these chemicals. Proposition 65 also prohibits California businesses from knowingly discharging significant amounts of listed chemicals into sources of drinking water. In practice, while the notifications are required, they are frequently ignored. With a list of over 900 chemicals, many of which occur naturally in very minute amounts, most Californians often pay little or no attention to the warnings. The fact that these warnings can go unheeded, unfortunately does not release product sellers from the obligation to inform a California purchaser that the products contain or may contain even trace amounts of the listed agents. For example, the allowance for lead in elemental Calcium is 0.8 micrograms per 1000 milligrams and the allowance for Cocoa Powder is 1.0 microgram per gram. The Seller under Prop 65 must provide a warning. Since such warnings are not required in any other state, the packaging most suppliers provide contains no Proposition 65 warnings.
